What's Happening in Jefferson

Regional news and perspective from the north. No algorithm. No agenda. Just what matters here and why.

Jefferson news is local news — county supervisors, school boards, water boards, fire seasons, and the occasional item that makes the state or national press for reasons the region finds slightly puzzling. We cover it at a human scale, from a perspective that actually knows the geography.

What We Follow

County Government

Siskiyou, Trinity, Del Norte, Modoc, and Shasta counties in California; Klamath, Jackson, and Josephine counties in Oregon. Board of supervisors, elections, local ordinances, and the ongoing business of governing very large, very lightly populated places.

Natural Resources

Water rights, timber harvesting, mining permits, grazing allotments, and fish and wildlife management. The economy of Jefferson is still largely tied to the land, and the decisions that govern how that land is used matter enormously.

Fire

Wildfire season, prescribed burns, evacuation orders, post-fire watershed recovery, and the policy debates around all of it. Fire is a permanent feature of Jefferson life. Ignoring it would be journalistic malpractice.

Infrastructure

Roads, bridges, broadband, and healthcare access. The basics are harder to deliver across Jefferson's distances than in most of California or Oregon. Gaps in infrastructure are gaps in quality of life, and they're worth documenting.

Economy

Agriculture, ranching, tourism, timber, and whatever is growing in the gaps. Small-business openings and closings, seasonal employment, and the slow evolution of what "work" looks like in a remote region.

Education

Rural school districts face consolidation pressure, teacher recruitment challenges, and per-pupil funding disparities. Several Jefferson counties run some of the smallest K-12 schools in their respective states. The quality varies enormously.

Fire Northern California and Klamath River Canyon

The North-State Fire Map Is Waking Up

CAL FIRE's active incident board on July 13 showed a more serious summer pattern, including active fires in Sierra, Lassen, and Plumas counties. The BLM's Klamath River Canyon fire prevention order also remains in effect from Keno Dam to the Oregon-California border.

Water Scott and Shasta Rivers, Siskiyou County

The Scott and Shasta Are Still Under Orders

The State Water Board's July 2 Scott River addendum conditionally suspends curtailments for listed groundwater rights, but surface water curtailments remain in effect. The Shasta River watershed remains under a June 16 addendum that reinstated conditional curtailments and set more conditions before junior rights can divert.

Access Crater Lake, Lava Beds, and Oregon Caves

Open Does Not Mean Simple

Crater Lake lists West Rim Drive, North Entrance Road, Highway 62, Cloudcap Road, and Pinnacles Road as open, but East Rim Drive is still closed from Park Headquarters to Phantom Ship Overlook and Cleetwood Cove Trail remains closed for the season. Lava Beds reports all park roads and both campground loops open, while Oregon Caves tours run daily through September with guide-only cave access.

Events Rogue Valley and Yreka

Jackson County Fair Week Starts July 14

Travel Medford lists the Jackson County Fair opening July 14 at The Expo in Central Point, with bull riding, fair concerts, Medford Third Friday, Rogue Jet Boat Adventures, and the Rogue Valley Farm Tour all on the near calendar. The Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds calendar still shows the State of Jefferson Expo and NorCal Carving Championships, but the public listing is thin on date detail.

Water Klamath River Basin

The Klamath Recovery Story Is Now in the Watching Stage

CDFW reported last fall that salmon were reoccupying historic habitat after the four lower Klamath dams came out, with Chinook counts in newly accessible tributaries, wild juvenile Chinook in Fall Creek, cooler seasonal water patterns, and smaller harmful algal blooms.
